Some newspapers cancelled the strip over that colossal violence ! It was just like the violence of the early 30's (torture and murder of bystanders) caused some papers to cancel.
There are also the innocents who got caught in the gunplay, decedents, only known as corpses or skeletons (Judge Carver wrapped up in a carnivorous plant, the skeleton found in a bridge abutement,...)
Gould believed that deformity & disfigurement was linked to criminality. So his bad guys got disfigured, and most were messily killed (Rhodent burned to death in his car, Flattop drowned under a pier, Flattop junior driven insane by a ghost and then shot by Lizz. The ghost then said "mission accomplished !" and flew off !. Krome had an arm amputated due to a bullet wound gone septic and then froze to death, while still weak from the slipshod operation. Fifth Millyun & Flyface swept away in a tidal wave. Mole's still around and is reformed, but his ugly grand-daughter got blown up in an explosion. Spots (never shown face on) bought the farm in a shoot-out with Dick Tracy. Shaky froze to death under a pier, Headache got shot through the head by colleagues, repeatedly. And I could go on. Anna Enog ground to death in a machine. Sphinx crushed by the counterweight of an elevator.
The series was hosted by "officer" Joe Bolton, who, one day, incurred my wrath and high dudgeon -and I never watched the show again ! Never missed it either ...
